Writer Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the new version of Salem’s Lot is to make vampires scary again
Narrative
The author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem in search of inspiration for his next book and discovers that the townspeople are being attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire. He wants to get away from the sexier, more romantic undead that have plagued pop culture for the better part of the last quarter-century, thanks to everything from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries.

When Ben reads old newspapers on microfilm at the library, the headline reads, “Local Couples Victims of DUIs.” The article was supposedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “DUI” was not yet in common use. I loved this book when I read it in the 80’s and was looking forward to this movie but I was disappointed
I am no purist and usually don’t mind different interpretations of a fictional story but the changes weren’t really the worst thing would have been the bland storytelling and the movie would have felt rushed. There was no character development, the acting was mediocre although Alfre Woodard stood out and it’s a shame she wasn’t shown more often as she was the best part of the movie for me even though she was barely involved and I can’t say enough, there was nothing happening in the story that interested me.
I wouldn’t recommend it
A little backstory about anyone would have been nice, an actual portrayal of the developing romance that was being played out so we could really feel the sadness of the main characters, anything other than the bland scenes we were given. Unfortunately this is a forgettable movie.
